Waipuna Sushi
My cousin and I where driving around the island just enjoying the windward breeze. It was my first time trying Waipuna Sushi, while my cousin have eaten there on different occasions.
When we entered the store we were welcomed by a wonderful young lady who made us feel welcomed. It's a cute little shop with seating area. We chatted for a bit. The menu is a bit confusing just because there are so many different options to choose from. Don't get me wrong more options is good but just a little overwhelming. I wasn't sure what I wanted so they young lady helped me choose and explained what was inside. You could tell that she knew her sushi!
Can I just say when we got our sushi the packaging and presentation was on point. The sushi was fresh and tastes so GOOD!
I'd definitely recommend visiting this place! Both local and tourist. -

This is their negitoro. I'm sorry to say, this place has disappointed me a couple of times, and it's my fault for going back and thinking it was an off day. Terrible rice, very sloppy, and poor quality ingredients.

I'm giving 3 stars consistent with everyone else.
I had a long run early in the morning and was really looking forward to my sushi treat meal, in HAWAII! It was sure to be amazing compared to Utah, right? Sadly, I was wrong.
The lady who helped me was so, so helpful and nice. If I could rate this place based on her, I would. Alas, it's the food people care about.
I ordered several different rolls, like three or four of them. Unfortunately, two of them were much the same, with poke on top that was incredibly slimy.
The deep fried roll I got (and was super excited for) was extremely disappointing. The rolls were all WAY too big and fell apart; the deep fried one was no exception. Not to mention the "deep fried" aspect of it was strange: it wasn't a light fry batter like tempura, as with other fried rolls I've had. No, it was extremely crunchy fried batter, like around orange chicken. If the roll hadn't been so incredibly massive and poorly put together, then it may have been OK. But it was just way too hard to eat on a lot of levels.
I also guess they couldn't wait to mop the floor with bleach, so they did that while I was eating, which was gross.
I'll say the one redeeming thing was a coconut boba drink that I got. I'm glad it turned out well, since the lady making it had to be coached through the whole thing, and I was expecting disaster.
Anyway, honestly, folks, I'm not sure the people working here have ever even taken a sushi making class. It was a pretty sorry attempt at sushi. If you're not getting a boba drink or a super basic $3-5 roll to go, I'd avoid this place. Will not revisit if I return to Kailua.
Who'd have thought that Utah could do better sushi than Hawaii? -

This place is legit! Good sushi and worth the cost! Customer service is good but the food quality makes up for it. They have many choices which can be somewhat confusing but they have all the right sushi combinations. I'd eat here again and again before going to Genki Sushi
